what is the price of a new cedar shake roof for a 3600 sq ft home?
waht is typically the labor cost for tearing the old roof and installing the new roof.
Here in northern Michigan I get $70.00 per 100 square feet for tear off, and $271.00 per 100 square feet for labor and material for cedar shingles. Cedar Shakes are much higher in price. I hope this helps. Also the square footage of you home will not be the same for the area of the roof, the pitch of the roof will determine area. Regards, Dale

Cedar shake is very expensive. 3600sq ft doesn’t really tell me how big your roof is. Typically, for regular asphalt shingles, you’d be looking at 200+/sq. (10′x10′) for tear off and replace. For cedar add $$$, for every gable, dormer, and every inch of roof pitch over 8/12 (8in rise, 12in run) add $$$. Is your current roof in decent shape? Will you need to replace plywood or roof planks? Add $$$.
My advice as a former roofer is to find a good 30year asphalt shingle (they even make some that look like cedar) and hire a reputable roofer. He will be more expensive but you will get what you pay for.

Better get a roofer out to estimate. I can tell you that someone I know in Victoria BC got quotes a couple of years ago for replacing his shake roof, on a home a bit smaller, one storey with no dormers or anything, and if I remember right it was somewhere in the $50,000 range. Might have been more. It was enough to make him choke and he is not short of money. The HOA where he lived required everyone to replace with original materials, and he was the first homeowner in that exclusive and expensive little enclave to need a new roof. I think when he presented his roof estimates and everyone realized that they would soon be facing similar bills, they agreed to change the rules.

i install roofs using only time tested materials and techniques so i have plenty of experience with cedar. first of all it is not "expensive". big box stores have turned most americans against anything that is not cheap and temporary. cedar will last twice as long as modern asphalt, will age gracefully (that is look better with age instead of worse), and you won’t have the guilt of dealing with cheap toxic junk that is crowding our landfills and destroying the character of our homes. yes it will cost more than some ego driven white guy sending out his guys he picked up at home depot to slap some shingles as fast as they can to fulfill your "contract". but a good cedar roof is totally worth investing in. it sounds like you’re a homeowner trying to put the numbers together. i’m sure you already priced the shingles but please understand there are more materials involved in a proper wood roof. the labor number should be somewhere between 4 and 7 dollars a sf or 400 to 700 per square. i install most of my shakes and shingles in the bahamas and i usually get closer to the higher end of those numbers but i also install in the US from up north to down south and a good installer shouldn’t get less than 4. my best advise to you is to seek out a good INSTALLER, not a contractor…..i need to repeat this DO NOT HIRE A CONTRACTOR TO INSTALL A REAL ROOF. what a contractor does is in his title and it is NOT installing roofs. today roofing contractors in the US pretty much only deal with asphalt shingles and can’t tell you much more than what’s in the asphalt brochure. pretend you are a contractor for ten minutes and you will clearly see that it is in their best interest to cheat you. im not saying they’re all bad but that system has been extremely counterproductive and has left a trail of cheap ugly roofs that constantly need to be replaced all across america. i’m sure you’re on the right track even just thinking of using something real on your roof now you have to weed out all the liars and find someone who is real and capable of installing your roof properly. TEST everyone! don’t forget this is a buyers market. look at their work, talk to their customers. if they say it’s going to last 30yrs demand to see the 30yr old roof. this simple tip should weed out 90% of the fakers…..ask them if they will install cedar on a plywood deck if they say yes walk away. the most important thing about installing any kind of wood roof is breathe-ability. anyone qualified to install a wood roof should understand this completely. i wish you all the best. i travel anywhere for real roofs but i’m not cheap. i know guys in a lot of states if you’re interested in a referral feel free to email me. but you can find all of this on your own if you just make the TRUTH your guide.
