I needed some help in regards to roof repair
I noticed some (single singles) in my yard from my roof. At first I did not know where they were coming from because looking at my roof everything looks fine.
This afternoon, I had a handy man come out to the house and asked him for his suggestions. He stated that those "Shingles" are from my roof and they are coming from over the Ridge Vent.
I am not sure with the "roofing terminology" and I am not sure if this this true or what is the ridge vent?
Note: He did not get on the roof he just looked at the roof from different areas of the yard and pointed it out to me and mentioned from the road you can see the wood at the top. Though, as you know, (me not knowing at lot about roof repairs) I was not sure and a bit confused. But, I found a total of 10 Shingles.
First of all, I wanted to know what is the average cost of a repair of such sort. The shingles that have came off of the roof are "grey" in color probably Asphalt shingles because have mineral granule over it and are single pieces.
Second of all, he stated that the work will take all together 1 hour and 30 minutes. He mentioned he would buy the shingles and nails and other materials. Now, I am confused if that is all there is too it or does the ridge vent or cap also need to be replaced.
Also, what is the proper procedure of the repair? Also is the Ridge Cap and Vent the same thing? He also mentioned something about HIP roofing? I hope the problem is simple and that is where the shingles came from. He menioned it is good to get this replaced soon or it could cause leaks to woren an come thru the ceiling because he guessed that water is getting in the attic.
Could someone please give me some roofing tips!

Thank you so much!! I am a single lady and just do not want to get ripped off and give the work to someone trusted and make sure I am being told the correct information, if people know this type of work. Also, I want to make sure he told me the correct info and if there is anything I should also ask him.

As for what i understand about your situation it seems to me that the shingles ( also called ride cap) that cover your ridge vent have blown off. Not a big problem at all. Let me explain how the whole thing works. When you look at the your house you should see how there is something covering the very peak of it. This is called ridge vent. The reason why we do this is to have the moisture and heat that gets trapped in your attic a place to escape. If you would like to spend about 5 min to learn about this in alot more detail just go here on my site.

The reason why we put the capping over the ridge vent is because they come in 4 foot sections and fit end to end. Basically the same way two books would fit together if you placed them end to end on a table. The reason why we have to put shingles over them is for the fact that where the two pieces of ridge vent meet there is a space where the water can seep in.
As for your prices if your only missing 10 caps, you can buy a full bundle at Lowes for $23.48 and the 3 inch nails needed should only cost 2 maybe 3 dollars ( you dont need more then a 1 pound box) Your labor is another thing. To be honest I can replace 10 caps on ridge vent in maybe 3 minutes. So i don’t have a clue on how he gets an hour and a half. i would suggest asking him his price and then call another company and tell them " this other guy wants to charge me X amount to put back on 10 caps that blew off my ridge vent" They will underbid him i can bet. You can also keep your cost down by taking one of those shingles to Lowes and saying i need this color and buy 1 bundle of 3 TAB in that color as well as 1 pound box of 3 inch nails. They will help you load it into your car and then have the roofer you choose use them. I hope this has been helpful to you.
